Course Duration 4:00 hours for 30 days ONLY!
This training session required for current instructors to renew and focuses on Regulation updates and instruction techniques.
Required to be completed within 24 months of the last completed training and within 12 months prior to the expiration date of an individual’s certification.
You must get at least a 70% on this exam to receive a passing grade. You have 90 minutes to complete the exam. You have one (1) attempt to complete the exam. If you fail to pass the course, you MUST contact the school to have your failed exam removed from your profile and to be able to purchase the course again. When you complete the course, your results will be automatically sent to DCJS.
You are required to send to DCJS your training completion certificate along with your renewal application and fees.
You MUST print your completion certificate and upload into your DCJS profile and submit to DCJS yourself.
Reprinting Certificate or checking your score.
For Firearms Instructor – To receive credit from DCJS, each individual will need to submit the application for partial training exemption, $25 fee, and proof of their attendance, to include a copy of the certificate of completion bestowed at the conclusion of the course and
Official documentation that the applicant has successfully qualified with a minimum firearm range qualification of 85% in each of the following: revolver, semi-automatic handgun; and shotgun. If applying for a Patrol Rifle instructor designation a minimum firearm range qualification of 85% is also required. Documentation as well as the range scores are to be uploaded with the partial training waiver request.
6 VAC 20-173-90. Initial instructor application.
A. Each person applying for certification as an instructor shall meet the following minimum requirements for eligibility:
C. In addition to the instructor qualification requirements described in subsections A and B of this section, each applicant for certification as a firearms instructor shall submit to the department:
- Official documentation that the applicant has successfully completed a DCJS firearms instructor school or a waiver application with supporting documentation demonstrating completion of a firearms instructor school specifically designed for law-enforcement or private security personnel that meets or exceeds standards established by the department within the three years immediately preceding the date of the instructor application.
- Official documentation, in the form of a signed, dated range sheet with the qualification score and course of fire as prescribed in the firearms training requirements in 6 VAC 20-174, that the applicant has successfully qualified, with a minimum range qualification of 85%, with each of the following: a. A revolver;
b. semi-automatic handgun; and
c. A shotgun.
Firearms instructors applying to provide patrol rifle training must submit official documentation in the form of a signed, dated range sheet that the applicant has successfully qualified, with a minimum range qualification of 85%, with a patrol rifle.
